Dr. Marola is a board certified obstetrician gynecologist in his forty first year of practice having more fun in that endeavor than ever.  Simple reason is that about five years ago he gave up the stress of  major surgery, deliveries and call.  In his career he has delivered three generations of babies; many of whom are now adolescent and adult patients.  Many, if not all of the yearly visits with these patients are like a family reunion.

He likes to study his patient population, discerning trends in behavior and has done two local TV spots, one on raising children in the work place, the other on stay at home moms.

President of the Schenectady Teen Pregnancy Network for two years during which time he organized a teen pregnancy awareness week with TV spots and visits to schools.

For twenty years he was the lecturer on sexuality at various regional Roman Catholic Churches.

In 1993 Dr. Marola and I appeared on the Phil Donahue Show as panelists discussing the effects of STDs on women’s sexual behavior
Nurse anesthetist, Karen Mantis who works with him at Bellevue considers him to be the most energetic advocate for women.  He is older brother to four sisters, has  six daughters. eleven granddaughters and one great grand daughter. How could he not be.an advocate for women. Lest they feel slighted, he has two sons, nine grandsons and one great grandson.

This advocacy for women was a major influence in his decision to chronicle Bellevue’s ascendancy to excellence and its unique contribution to women’s care.

Susan M. Marola, R.N.

Some, when they have heard about this book, have conjectured that I wrote it in response to the Berger Commission which for flawed, faulty reasons wants this
gem of an institution to close.

That disastrous news was only revealed mid December.  I’m not that good; it has
taken me three and a half to four years, stealing time from a busy practice and
family life to complete.

Nor was I solicited by the Jorgensens, successors to the founders, nor by the
current administration.

This is not a challenge to the commission’s erroneous assessment, although I
sincerely hope it will help torpedo their conclusion.

From the very beginning of my writing, it represents an a priori admiration for the excellence in women’s care at an institution which came from the most humble beginning and arrived where it is, having bested the competition and thwarted
all of its enemies.
